Open Source

Open Source Technology

Free (open source) software is defined as:

Why Promote Open Source? Is it Really Better?

The basic idea behind Open Source is very simple: When programmers can read, redistribute and modify the source code for a piece of software, that software evolves. People improve it, people adapt it, and people fix bugs. This can happen at a speed that, if one is used to the slow pace of conventional software development, seems astonishing.

Generally speaking, this rapid evolutionary process produces better software than the traditional closed model. Free software involves the whole community working together to share ideas and fix problems. Additionally, developers really care about reliability. A program which is unsatisfactory will not achieve the popularity that its developers hope for. Furthermore, authors who make their source code available for all to see, put their personal reputations on the line at the potential risk of the community's disapproval.
